Marked for Mayhem

Have you ever wondered about what criteria criminals use to pick their next target? After many studies done by criminologists and victimologists they learned that rapists, robbers, and murderers look for certain characteristics in people that sets them aside from others.

Brad Morrison, convicted for raping 75 women in 11 states claims that if he saw construction boots outside of a house or a person wearing them he would skip right over them but a person listening on an iPod he would take into consideration. This is because the iPod acts as a big distraction whereas the boots make him worry that he won't be able to overpower them.

Do you agree that race, gender, size, and age don't matter but posture, walking speed, style, facial expressions, and awareness to surrounding does when it comes to picking their targets?

I think that the factors of who gets chosen is very wide ranged and depends on the attacker. I think that its ridiculous this happens to begin with nevermind the fact that people pick their victims because they are listening to an ipod rather than the shoes they are wearing. I definately believe that rapists pick their victims by the people they believe they can over power but i also think the qualities change for each offender.

As Danielle said, it depends on the attacker. However, I think that race, gender, age and size do matter. If a straight man is the attacker, he isn't likely going to rape a slouchy, slow man just because he is unaware of his situation. Maybe he will mug him, but rapists most likely assess the persons looks and then assess whether they are an easy target or not.

No, I do not agree with this statement, I think that everything listed about come into consideration when picking targets. When the criminals look at their next victim, they are going to highly consider all of the above, not one or the other because it’s all strategic. They will look at your race, size and age when it comes to seeing what type of target they want – younger, older, smaller, taller. They will look at your speed, style, and attitude so to say in order to see their power over you. People who commit these crimes strive for power, so they will take all into consideration that’s necessary in order to have a successful plan.

I found it very weird. The things the rapists use to determine who they can overpower, are crazy. I think that I agree with that these factors might be a sign of who they can overpower, but it is never a sure thing. Some people are sick.

I never before really thought of any criteria criminals used to pick their victims but it seems to make sense that they would choose people who look busy or distracted rather than someone who is walking down the street fully aware of his or her surroundings. I think that race, age, gender do not really matter so much in the decision.

I feel that people choose their victims on a criteria based on whichever crime they are about to commit. Rapists would pick people they know they can over power, but people who are going to steal things out of cars will target "good" looking cars or expensive ones. I feel that age or gender may play a role, in certain circumstances. I mean in the previous example, that man targeted only women. Clearly gender does play somewhat of a role.

I do agree that posture, walking speed, style, facial expressions, and awareness to surrounding all matter when a criminal is choosing a victim. I believe that if a guy is going to rape a woman then it does not matter as much to him what she looks like but more if he will be able to get away with it. However, I belive that criminals set different criteria for different crimes they are going to commit.

i believe that it matters on many things. yes i believe they look at if you weak and if your alone but i also believe there has to be a sense of attraction. Then again they are desprate. In all i think it realy does come down most components they need to atttack are looks and if your not with anyone. Those two really i think are the main components

i think that it has to do with age, race and size. For example age and size will matter beacuse a rapist wont go after a person that he/she cant overpower. also if they know that a person cant realy defend themselfs like an old person they r more likley of becoming victims.

I think that people really do underestimate the level of knowledge that a bad person actually has. They probably track down everything about you before actually making their entrance onto you.

I believe that bad people do bad things. There shouldn't be categorizing for how they do it or why. Age is just as important as a person's style is. I think everything may play a part in how a person goes about killing or raping someone. The suspect may do what they do for many reasons that are based on "personal preference". Everything must play a part into their logic or way of doing what the do.

i think Size posture facial expression and awareness do matter when someone is looking for a victim, because criminals like to get money easily, thats why they are criminalls and dont have jobs. They do this, because they don't want to have to fight someone for money they just want to get it s quick and as easy as they can. which makes sense that they would look for someone who would be an easy target.

I think many of these things are true but I also think it depends on who the attacker is. Some people do just pick random victims but I have heard of killers or rapist that do some sort of profiling on who they will attack. But one factor that I do think most attackers do choose a victim that they easily overpower.
