Why Positive Thinking is bad for you?

Many people swear by positive thinking and some have been helped by it. But positive thinking is not very effective and can be down right harmful in some cases. You first accept the fact that the situation is bad, then you move onto thinking, how can I make this less bad? It is like you are playing games with yourself. Some people can make the bad a good but many cannot. This is why positive thinking can be harmful. One thing you can do is train yourself not to label if things are good or bad.

So do not label what happens to you. Now you wont need positive thinking and much of your stress will disappear.
Do you think positive thinking is good or bad for you?

I think that positive thinking in the right place can be very good for you. I think it can help people through rough patches etc. Yet, I do believe that there are times where positive thinking can be a bag thing. For example, we all know people who are sometimes cluelessly optomistic and this sets them up for great disappointment. I have had many students over the years who have what I refer to as Visions of greatness in what they are actually able to achieve and this leads them to thinking they can do more then they are actually capable of. So in this sense I think for some people positive thinking can be a negative.

I think that a lot of times when people look at life with a "glass is half full" type of attitude it can be very rewarding and life might not seem so difficult or unsatisfying. Although, like in the post above me, it might also become unsatisfying if you look at the world with so much optimism that you are setting yourself up for disappointment because the bad might be perceived as being worse than it actually is.

I think that positive thinking can be good and bad depending on the situation. For example when a person is stressed out about something, positive thinking can be very helpful. It will help them to relax and think in a better way. But in other situations it can be harmful to a person.

I agree with Hannah, I think that postive thinking has its good and bad qualities. For example, if you build up a situation too much in your head and then it isn't as good as you thought it would be, it may be more disapointing than it could have been. (Or just plain disappointing when the siutation isn't bad at all. For example, going on vacation and overthinking how amazing the hotel will be.) However, if you overthink a siutation too much (in a bad way), you can really stress yourself out.
