On Being Homeless for 35 Minutes in Central London

In this article, the author was on a layover in London, and ended up sitting down and talking to a homeless guy named John.  John told his story how he had lost all his money, got a divorce, and is now living on the streets.

He asked for some money, and then asked for the author to watch his stuff while he went to wash his clothes. He ended up leaving his backpack, which was just full of trash, and an empty cracker box.  The author was at first upset with this, but figured out that this guy needed the money he stole more than he did.

My question to you is, would you be able to live in the life of a homeless person for a day?  Why or why not?

I don't think I would be able to live in the life of a homeless person for a day because I see homeless people all the time, and just by looking at them, I feel bad that they have to live like that. If I had to live like that, I wouldn't be able to, because those people have nothing. I wouldn't be able to live like they do.

If it's just one day, of course I'd be able to. Yeah, it'd be boring and humbling, but one day would be absolutely no problem for me.

No, I do not think I would be able to be homeless for a day. I say this because I know how I look at homeless people on the streets and I would not imagine someone looking at me that way. I don't like to ask people for help, food, or money, I would try to find my own way by to survive. So no I couldn't go through a day being homeless, I think that it is depressing and very sad and I feel for anyone who has to go through that.

I would at least try to live in the life of a homeless person for one day. In today's society we are used to having more than what we need when it comes to clothes and electronics. So thinking about how the poor homeless person people survive out there is any interesting thing. So I would try it out to see how it is in their shoes.

I personally don't believe that I would be able to be homeless for a day, especially if it's in the middle of winter. I wouldn't like that idea that I am completely open to the public and I can never just have any privacy. I also like having a place to call my own, and I wouldn't be able to have that being homeless.

I would not want to be a homeless person for even 1 hour, because I can't stand that level of negative attention. Everyone walking by would be giving me looks and passing judgement right away, and I doubt I would be able to handle it.

I would be able to be homeless for a day. I know enough about basic survival and covering my own ass that not having a home for a day would be only an inconvenience, nothing more. I can go without eating for more than a day, water's free from fountains, internet can be acquired at libraries if I absolutely need it. I know homeless people and how they live. A good friend of mine hasn't had a place of his own for 15 years. I know a little bit about living without the benefit of a home.

There is no way I would be able to live on the streets like that. I can barely stand the cold for five minutes or transporting from the house to the car living in it would be murderous. I do have sympathy for them, they are strong people and I wish they were all taken care of but we can't solve this problem over night.

Yes, i would be able too. It's only 1 day, that's not hard. They have to do it for their whole lives. Unless its the middle of winter or fall. Other than that, living on the streets for a day wouldn't be so hard, it would definitely suck, but I think I can definitely do it.

Well, yes and no because I wouldn't mind being a homeless person for a day depending on the conditions such as what I have, the climate, and many more. I would probably be a very picky homeless person. The life of a homeless person in central London differ greatly from living in the elements; relying on others for food and etc or relying on self for food and etc.

One winter, I participated in a sleep out for the homeless. It was gathering a bunch of big boxes and having everyone sleep outside, while sponsors paid for us to do that. It seemed hard to do because it was so cold, but considering that people do that for their entire life. We got to prepare for our sleepout with how ever many layers we could wear. Homeless people couldnt. So I believe that for one night, its very possible for me to live homeless, but long term, would be very difficult

I always joke around that I would rather be homeless than go to school and have a job, but if it came down to actually being homeless I wouldn't be able to handle it. Maybe for like 2 hours but anymore than that I wouldn't be able to do it. I would be cold and hungry and the only way I would be able to do it is if I was homeless in the spring.

i believe, an this may sound cruel, but homeless people have chosen their lifestyle and don't want to get out of it. im not talking about the guy who all of a sudden ended up in the streets. there are many homeless people who have been homeless after they got tired of working their butts off for nothing. the government took 40% they had the other 60% to pay ridiculous housing, food, etc prices. with some conditions like depression, you give up on that 60% and choose to take 0 - homeless. there are soup kitchens, churches, pricechoppers open 24/7 etc in which you can spend your time in.
if i gave up on life and working for the man i too would probably become homeless. yes its cold outside and wet and youre hungry a lot of the time, but there are lots of support structures set up. because were used to the comforts of life we cant imagine being homeless, but there are thousands of people who do it everyday - they just gave up

I do not think I could be homeless for a day because now that I am a teenager and have everything handed to me I do not think that I would be able to live on the street, cold, hungry, and tired. I would miss being able to have food, shelter, and all other nescesities if I was homeless.

If it was for a good cause I would definitly do it. But as a lifestyle being homeless is definetly not something I want to be. I plan on working very hard to get to where I want to be in life so I would sure hope with all of my hard work I wouldn't have to be homeless. I don't think that Begging, not having food, or living in a shelter, or even on the streets would be something that someone would choose for themselves in the future.
