What Do We Really Desire?

"We always long for the forbidden things, and desire what is denied us." - Francois Rebelais.

There are a lot of factors that influence what we desire and how bad we desire that thing. There are two different types of what we desire:

1. Our desire is greater when the object is real and attainable
2. Our desire is greater when the object is imaginary and unattainable.

Your imagination has no limits you can dream and dream and it can never end and there is no limit to how big the dream can be. However, when you have to dream about something that actually might happen, say college for instance, you have limits to how much you can dream. So on that note,

Which do we desire more; real circumstances or our fantasies?

I think we desire both and we mix what can really happen with our fantasies and deisre that it happens. I think we add fantasies when we desire something to so much of an extent and we might know that we can never get it so it would be a fantasy desire.

I think what we really desire most is fantasy. Our mind makes up the perfect situation and the perfect scenario for what we want most. Dreams have been said to show what we desire the most as well as what we fear or worry about the most. In our heads we can make anything possible no matter how far fetched it may be in real life. You can make yourself more attractive or more sensitive, you can change your entire personality all based on what you want. It’s true that in reality the thing we most desire may be in front of us, but is it completely true that we can get it? For example if you have feelings for someone and they already have a partner there’s a part of you that wishes for them to break up because your jealous and you want them to be your significant other. In your head you can make that happen, of course its not real, but many people thrive on the fantasies in their heads. Some fantasies are even unconsious and can surprise us when our mind thinks them up. Our unconsious desire is our most wanted.
