7.5 million Facebook users are under 13

This article I read is mainly concerned with the young children using Facebook. In a recent study, researchers found that 7.5 million out of 20 million users are minors, under the age of 13. This wouldn’t be a big deal if it weren’t for the fact that 7.5 % of these children reported being bullied, harassed, or taken advantage of while using this site.

Do you believe young children are at risk if they spend too much time on Facebook un-supervised by an adult?

Personally, I think that Facebook should be used to keep in contact with those that you won't see after such things as graduating or moving. For this reason, young children really don't need to be on Facebook. I definitely think there are a lot of risks involved with young children and Facebook and they can be easily avoided by simply making sure that they are not exposed to it.

Too much time on Facebook for anybody could be harmful. Kids expecially could be harmed because many do not know the difference between real and fake. Someone could easily make a fake page, pretend they are someone different. If parents do allow their kids to have a Facebook, then they should have everyone except family blocked, and maybe some close friends. But in reality, nobody in middle school or younger should have any reason to go onto the internet, except maybe game websites.

I agree with Ashley and Alycia. Facebook has specific uses, mainly geared toward academic and personal use. However, when dealing with children, precautions have to be taken. So yes, children are at risk if left unsupervised. But parents should set up and limit computer time to prevent it.

I feel that young children do not need to have a facebook. There are too many people out there who pretend to be someone else and young children lack the capacity to understand and realize that they are fake, and bad. There just is no reason for a child under 14 or 15 to even have a facebook. Facebook should only be used to talk to friends you havent seen in a while and see what their up to, not to stalk pages and spend hours on it. so yes I believe that young children are at risk.
